Do cold emails to VCs actually work?

Short answer: yes. Well-known companies have raised from cold outbound. But "cold email works" hides a lot of variance. Here is what actually decides it.

What makes a cold email work

  • The right recipient. The partner who invests in your sector and stage, not a generic firm inbox.
  • A subject that earns the open. Name the company and one metric, not "quick chat".
  • Traction first. Your strongest proof in the first line.
  • One clear ask. A 20-minute call with a date range, under 150 words.
  • A verified address. A great email to a dead inbox bounces and does nothing.

What makes it fail

Long paragraphs, no specific reason you emailed them, a vague ask, and guessed email addresses that bounce. Most "cold email does not work" stories are really one of these.

It is a funnel

Even good cold emails mostly get no reply. Send enough of the right ones and the math works. See how many investors to contact.
